Every employment-related legal claim has a statute of limitations. In other words, there is a limitation on the amount of time that you have to file a claim. In most situations, if you do not file an employment-related legal claim within the statute of limitations, you will forever lose the ability to pursue that claim.
Statute of limitations examples:
Title VII (race, sex, etc. discrimination): file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC within 180 days.
ADEA (age discrimination): file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC within 180 days.
Americans with Disabilities Act (disability discrimination): file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC within 180 days.
Fair Credit Reporting Act (employment/credit report issues): file a Complaint in court within 2 years, or 5 years in some rare circumstances.
Fair Labor Standards Act (overtime and minimum wage violations): 2 year statute of limitations (3 years if the violation is "willful").
